Issue addressed

In October 2015 we launched our new online web portal for candidates applying for APC examinations and skills assessments. This was after over a year of design and development by our staff and our IT partners.

Practice introduced or changed

The web portal allows our candidates from Australia and overseas to commence their registration journey using the latest technology, including phone and tablet platforms. The online eligibility processes have streamlined the way that we can provide our examination and assessment services and are moving us to a paper-less environment.

This has transformed the way that our examinations and assessments applicants apply and interact with us, and has created significant internal efficiencies. It also gives us more information on the candidates and applicants, which is allowing us to plan our work and provide accurate data back to our stakeholders. This was part of stage one of the implementation of our Information Systems Strategic Plan (ISSP), and is a significant achievement onto which we are building further enhancements.

Candidates can upload high resolution documents through the web portal for assessment by our assessment officers to review, and they can add documents to their portfolios over a time.

This was the second phase of our IT enhancements, the first of which was the launch of our new website and “brand” in June 2015. The web portal has been embedded into the website as part of this whole development.

Impact

The online eligibility processes have streamlined the way that we can provide our examination and assessment services and are moving APC to a paper-less environment. This process has been very well received by our candidates, and has enabled us to meet an increased demand without increasing our processing times.

We have also been invited to present on our assessment procedures and experience in moving from paper-based to online assessments at the Skilled Migration Assessing Authorities Forum. This allowed us the opportunity to share with other professional bodies and assessment authorities the lessons we’ve learned through this process and highlight the benefits of moving to online assessments.
